| Acupuncture Schools: |
| Licensed and accredited Acupuncture Schools instruct students on various techniques and practices of this ancient Chinese healing method which prepares students for professions in this well established healing art. Acupuncture has been used with success to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions, including but not limited to headaches, arthritis, weight loss, smoking cessation and stress.
Acupuncture Schools tell us that the practice of acupuncture is based on the belief that the body will respond positively to a series of fine needles placed in key locations for a short period of time. Acupuncturists are trained to gently tap the needles into place, penetrating only the uppermost layers of the skin. Although it sounds painful, most patients feel little, if any, discomfort.
Some Acupuncture Schools include the teaching of the five-element Oriental Medicine approach to acupuncture, which is often used in conjunction with traditional Western medical practices.
There are various different styles of acupuncture education and Chinese Medicine that are offered by various Acupuncture Schools around the country and worldwide. In addition to advanced acupuncture needling techniques, Acupuncture Schools offer courses in Traditional Chinese Medicine that often include other aspects of traditional medicine, such as anatomy, body therapy, massage therapy, and biosciences. Depending on the school, students may be required to study herbal medicine or are offered herbal courses as electives.
Becoming a professional acupuncturist can involve years of study in one of more than fifty accredited Acupuncture Schools in the U.S. and Canada. Graduates of Acupuncture Schools will obtain a degree in acupuncture; however, most states also require professional licensure in order to practice this healing art. Internships in acupuncture begin in clinical settings, typically in the third year.
